Before their departure to Mexico, John looks at a pile of clothes Magda has prepared for him and says: - This is too much, I really don't need so much, just maybe a quarter of it all. Magda replies: - Just want to remind you that you brought only two shirts when you were packing for a two week vacation in Poland. So I wouldn't trust myself, if I were you.
John approaches a taxi driver in Mexico. - Excuse me sir, would you say Mexico is a developed or a developing country? - Uhh?
Guillermo sees Magda and her beet red face for the first time since her return from Mexico. - Hi Magda - he says - wow! you look a little black from your vacation.

'Studying algebra is no different from studying a foreign language' Magda read in the intro to 'Algebra for College Students' and decided to give math one more chance. Four days later she must disagree with this statement. It will be hard.

In her choice of a professional career, which took her over 6 years, Magda thought of the following: - the need for that profession - the commute - the pay -whether she would enjoy it at least a little - FOR IT NOT TO BE NECESSARILY TOO ACADEMICALLY DEMANDING The choice: an associate degree (two year degree, THEORETICALLY only high school graduation required) in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (utrasound technician). -Heyaa!- She thought - That is what I want to do! A few nights ago she was sitting speechless at an orientation course in a college, where she would like to enroll. That night she told her husband what she had learned, and he summarized it as following: - So you are going to have to take 5 prerequisites (college courses necessary to even apply for that program) including college math and physics (MAGDA and PHYSICS!) in the next 1,5 years and you will need to get an A in each of them to try to get into a program which usually has 12 spots for about 200 applicants? - yeah - she laughed. - And you are going to do it? - I'll try. Make my life fun. - Ok - he said - you are the one who always says to live in the present moment, John.- she laughed again, because even though the chances are low, it will be fun to be back in school and she needs math and science for any college degree.

Thursday afternoon was going to be long: apart from two of her own kids, Magda needed to look after Olus, too, and his mom was not going to pick him up till late at night. So, she decided to take them places and thought it would be nice to have donuts at Dunkin Donuts, since she REALLY needed a coffee. - Boys, would you like to have a donut at Dunkin Donuts? - she asked them They remained quiet for a second and then Mark spoke: - Mom, I DO NOT WANT JUNK FOOD! I will not eat at junk food restaurants, because the food has poison in it. It will give me bad teeth and make me fat and unhealthy. I want real food. Magda remained quiet for a minute. And then a wave of emotions came upon her, mainly a mix of amusement and guilt, because it is her who has been teaching her children healthy habits every single day since they were born. And now she was paying for it:)))) BTW, I had my coffee any way. Though they really did not want donuts!!!!

I don't know how to get throgh to Guillermo. How can I even comprehend the level of education that he received in a rural area of a third world country going to school for miles and only for five years? He is virtually illiterate and trying to teach him English is beyond me when he cannot even read Spanish well. But we are both trying three times a week. And our kitchen will get done. Ayaya... I knew I shouldn't have gone to that Bible study again that my friend goes to. Haven't been since November, but this past Tuesday I just wanted to read the bible, which is what we do at the bible study and just needed to get away from the kids, and read something else than facebook or cheap thrillers. It was going so well, the meeting I mean. The talk was interesting, I felt good. Even met a woman who used to be a Hasidic Jew and left at 16 and her parents proclaimed her dead to them and the entire family. Where do you find enough bravery and strength to be able to do something like that? Anyway the last part was a prayer, which was going well too, until the older lady Ginnie prayed for the victims in Haiti and said: 'Maybe it happened because they were spiritually evil and believed in voodoo'. My son Mark is not necessarily a very friendly guy at times. Today he had a playdate with two Mexican boys from our road. They all ran into the house and Mark screamed: - Nobody touch my legos!!!! Nobody touch any of my stuff! I had a talk with him and said to him to offer grapes to his guests, which he did running after them with the grapes screaming: - Guys!!! Eat the grapes now!!! And once they finally had one each, he grabbed the bowl and screamed again: - But don't eat the whole thing. Gee... I guess he was trying right? Dr. O. is a young pediatric dentist with a dad who is also a dentist. I guess they have money, because she couldn't understand why I hadn't called her right away when Adam's temporary fillings had fallen out, like it is so difficult to figure out that we had just stopped paying off a $2000 credit for her earlier services a half a year before. But obviously she couldn't figure it out. Well, any way here we were finally! And she told me my son needed two crowns $400 each under anesthesia of course which would be $1,300. $2,100 for two teeth that are going to fall out in 3-4 years! We are not doing it. Will put another set of temps and pray that they stay longer this time. And at the age of 4 or so, when his speech will have developed we will have them pulled out. Life is not really boring, though monotonius. Same routine every day, sometimes running gives me a good high for the day. I feel like I am becoming stronger. And then the boys, they make me high as a kite. I guess that's the maternal instinct: being able to look at them, hug them, be with them... Ble, I know it sounds boring but boy there is nothing better in this world than being a mom! and yes I am going back to school. Soon. Good night my Polish friends, if anyone even reads my notes:)))

Mark is trying to figure out the world
In the middle of dinner Mark suddenly burst out laughing: -Mom, you are Jewish -and laughed as if he had just said the funniest joke. -I'm not, Mark, but do you know anyone who is? - Magda asked calmly though surprised, because they don't really discuss religions so much yet. Maybe at school? - the 'Acidics'- replied Mark. - Who? - Magda didn't quite understand. - You know, the 'Acidics', like David L. (a neighbor) - You mean the Hacidics - Magda said and then continued - You know, you don't have to be Hacidic (No idea how to spell it!!!) to be Jewish. We have other Jewish friends - and she started mentioning a few names. - And we are not Jewish? - said Mark - No, we are Christian, or protestant, but you may be something else once you grow up and live a little longer. - I know, I am not Jewish because I was born in 2004, right? - All right Mark, eat your dinner- said Magda finally. - Mommy, our teacher is engaged now - said Mark while the boys were bathing. - Cool - replied Magda - And now she is going to get 'pregnate'. |
